Virtual Reality in the Construction Industry

The construction industry has begun to change with the use of popular technology, like virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). This type of technology can be used in a variety of ways to reduce the risk of accidents and injury on construction sites.

Virtual reality is a type of technology that displays a computer generated simulation of a 3D image or environment that can be interacted with in a real or physical way by using an electronic device. Similarly, augmented reality uses a computer generated image to transform a digital game into a real world environment.

Training Tool

Virtual reality devices can be used in the construction industry as an enhanced training tool for employees. VR glasses can transfer trainees into another reality that mimics a construction site. Other accessories, such as gloves, remotes and headphones can ensure the environment seems as real as possible for the user. This technology is able to depict falling objects, fire outbursts, and various weather conditions the workers may be faced with on a real construction site. This type of technology is able to take workplace safety to a whole new level and hopefully decrease the amount of injuries caused on a construction site.

Smart Devices

Apps for smartphones as well as augmented reality glasses can pave the way for the use of AR within the construction industry. This type of technology enables construction site managers to evaluate what might be concealed behind pre-existing floors or walls. It allows them to detect harmful areas on the construction site by giving them a clear warning as they approach it. Certain types of augmented reality devices can provide information about construction plans and detect serious risks, giving site workers another level of safety.

Introducing these types of technologies to the construction industry can only increase the safety of workers and support accident prevention. Although the construction industry might be behind on technological updates, this is one to seriously consider adopting to make the industry a safer one.
